Chelsea's Marcos Alonso faces ban after FA charge over Shane Long challenge

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso faces a three-match ban after he was charged by the Football Association for a tackle on Shane Long that went unpunished.

TV footage showed Alonso catch Long on the calf with his studs shortly before half-time in Chelsea's 3-2 victory at Southampton, but referee Mike Dean and his assistants missed the incident and consequently took no action.

The Chelsea player has until 6 p.m. on Wednesday to respond. If the charge is accepted or upheld, he will miss Chelsea's next three matches -- Sunday's FA Cup semifinal against Southampton as well as Premier League games against Burnley and Swansea.

An FA statement said: "Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time are referred by the FA to a panel of three former elite match officials. Each panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.

"For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous."

After the match, Southampton manager Mark Hughes said: "Shane's got a gash down the calf -- having seen it again there's a clear red card. There's clear intent to hurt Shane, it was raked down the back of the calf.

"It's a dangerous tackle and could have broken his leg, in my view, and how the three officials, who were near it, all missed it was a mystery to me."
