Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek could play as striker - Antonio Conte

LONDON -- Antonio Conte has said Ruben Loftus-Cheek has all the attributes to shine as a striker for Chelsea after the youngster produced a promising display in the unfamiliar position in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Loftus-Cheek started the match as the closest man to Michy Batshuayi in what often seemed a 4-2-4 system for Chelsea, playing a role in the creation of both of the Belgium international's goals as well as striking the post himself in the first half. Victor Moses scored the other goal for the hosts.

A spirited Bristol Rovers side gave Chelsea a significant scare in the second half before the Premier League giants booked their passage into the third round, but despite his wider frustrations with his team, Conte made a point of praising Loftus-Cheek's performance after the match.

"I liked it," the Italian said when asked about the youngster's contribution. "He played a good game with a good intensity.

"He did what I want: In defensive situations he became a midfielder, when we were attacking he became a forward. I'm happy for his commitment, his attitude. Ruben has great potential for a young player.

"He can improve a lot and I'm pleased because I see every day during the training sessions that he wants to work very hard. I like this."

Asked if he believes Loftus-Cheek is suited to playing as a striker, Conte replied: "Yes. I think that he has the right characteristics to play in this role. He's very strong, he's very good to play [with his back to goal], and also good technically. He sees the goal very well and has a good shot. He can play also in this role."

Loftus-Cheek could now be regarded as Chelsea's third-choice striker ahead of Loic Remy -- who has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace-- and academy youngster Dominic Solanke, who was an unused substitute on Tuesday. Bertrand Traore was allowed to join Ajax on loan earlier this month.
