Chelsea captain John Terry tells fans: I want to stay at Stamford Bridge

LONDON -- John Terry has told Chelsea supporters he wants to remain at the club but stopped short of saying whether he would accept the offer of a one-year contract extension.

An emotional Terry, suspended for Sunday's 1-1 draw with champions Leicester, addressed the Stamford Bridge crowd during Chelsea's lap of appreciation.

He thanked the fans for their support during his prolonged contract negotiations and reiterated his desire to finish his career at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea confirmed on Friday that Terry was considering a new one-year deal after a meeting with director Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck last week.

The captain subsequently said the offer entailed him accepting "a different role" next season.

"We all want the same thing," Terry told Chelsea supporters, who chanted: 'We want you to stay.'

"I've said for a long time I want to finish my career here. I'll be speaking to the club over the next few days. I want to stay, the club knows that, the fans know that.

"Chelsea is my life, as it is yours. The best moments of my life have been in this stadium. You've been a big part of that."

He said Chelsea had experienced "a difficult season" but added: "We've all accepted things have not been good enough, but we'll be back next year and we'll be fighting for this title."

Asked about Terry's future in his postmatch news conference, interim manager Guus Hiddink said: "I'm happy that they are talking. For me it's not good to make speculation. Personally, I hope they manage to come to a solution.

"Although he is 35, he is still very physically and mentally fit, so he can contribute a lot wherever he wants to play."

Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri -- the manager who helped establish Terry as a first-team regular during his spell at Stamford Bridge -- paid tribute to his former captain after the match.

"John Terry is as my son," he said. "I believed in him when he was young. I put him in the team when there were a couple of world champions in [Marcel] Desailly and [Franck] Leboeuf.

"He made a fantastic career, and I hope he can continue."
