Chelsea's Baba Rahman 'has to recover' - manager Guus Hiddink

LONDON -- Guus Hiddink has challenged Baba Rahman to recover from the mistake that led to his substitution at half-time of Chelsea's 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton on Saturday.

Rahman's wayward header allowed Shane Long to race through on goal and put Southampton ahead in the 42nd minute at St Mary's, and Brazilian youngster Kenedy took the Ghanaian's place at left-back for the second half.

Goals from Cesc Fabregas and stand-in captain Branislav Ivanovic completed a stirring Chelsea comeback and after the match, Hiddink admitted that Rahman's error was the primary reason for his "very harsh" substitution.

"He has to recover," Hiddink said of Rahman. "You cannot always wait [to make substitutions] and we need everyone. He did some decent play in the recent games but we also like to be critical and defensively you have to do your job as well.

"I talked to him and Steve [Holland] talked to him as well. You saw when he put his shirt over his face on the pitch, he was thinking 'Oh what did I do now'. At half-time he was sitting in the dressing room [feeling] down before I announced it. Not just [because of his reaction] but that's why we made the change."

Saturday's victory over Southampton was the third Chelsea match in a row missed by captain John Terry as the 35-year-old continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during a 5-1 win over Newcastle United earlier this month.

Terry now faces a battle to be fit in time to face PSG and Hiddink says he is determined not to take any risks with his captain's recovery.

"John is on the pitch, doing some running and we'll see how he reacts to training this week," Hiddink added. "I'm a little bit cautious because these kind of injuries have a danger of getting a setback, regardless of your age. You must be very careful."

Chelsea have fared well defensively in Terry's absence and Hiddink says he is pleased but not surprised by the performances of Gary Cahill and Ivanovic since the duo were partnered at the heart of defence.

The Dutchman said: "They have been good. Of course it wasn't new for Branislav to play in that position -- I even saw him before Chelsea playing there for Lokomotiv -- and he has done well. It's a good combination.

"They manage to encourage the team by defending strongly and playing the simple and constructive ball. Ivanovic might be one of the top headers [of a ball] in the league. I think he has made a lot of goals in his career.

"We'll see what will happen [when Terry returns to fitness]. But mainly I'm happy that I have a little bit of a luxury problem to sweat about the decision. It's always good for a manager to have a lot of players. I would like to have more luxury problems in the squad."
