Thibaut Courtois: Chelsea must reach a final to salvage season

Chelsea must reach the final of either the Champions League or FA Cup to salvage their season, according to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Premier League champions' title defence crumbled into ruin well before Christmas, with Jose Mourinho being relieved of his duties in December after presiding over a disastrous run of results.

Interim manager Guus Hiddink has overseen a 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions but Chelsea languish in 13th in the Premier League table, 17 points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City with just 13 games left to play.

The Champions League and FA Cup still offer a chance of bringing silverware back to Stamford Bridge this season, however, and Courtois insists that nothing less than going deep into either cup competition will do.

"We've had too many draws to climb the [Premier League] table," the Belgian told Chelsea's official website. "In other games, like against Watford and West Brom, we should have won, so it's a pity because we could have maybe been ninth or eighth but we are where we are.

"The Newcastle game next week is a very important one where we have to get the three points. We've had too many draws at Stamford Bridge and the supporters deserve a victory.

"After that we play in the Champions League and FA Cup against two great sides [Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City] and we have to try to win those games because the only way to save our season is to reach the final in one or both of them."

Chelsea travel to Paris to take on the runaway Ligue 1 leaders in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday, and Courtois says he and his team-mates are optimistic of edging out PSG over two matches.

"The confidence is good, in the last three or four games we've barely conceded a goal," he added.

"We have the confidence to go to PSG and win the game; we know it's really difficult, last year we had a really tough game there but we want to get a good result to bring back to Stamford Bridge and finish it here."
