Baba Rahman looking for Chelsea opportunities under Guus Hiddink

Baba Rahman has said he is hoping for more first-team opportunities at Chelsea under interim manager Guus Hiddink than he got under Jose Mourinho.

Rahman, 21, moved to Stamford Bridge in a reported £21.7 million deal from Augsburg last summer but has since made just nine appearances in all competitions, seven of which have been starts.

Cesar Azpilicueta kept his place in front of Rahman at left-back for Sunday's FA Cup third-round victory over Scunthorpe United despite having sustained a double fracture of the jaw against Crystal Palace the previous week, but the Ghanaian full-back remains optimistic that more chances will come his way under Hiddink.

"As a young player you have to get used to such a big club and this world-class league first," Rahman told Sport Bild. "I was aware that I would get left out now and then. Of course, it's frustrating for every footballer to not make the squad, and I don't want to experience that less.

"I regularly made the squad recently. From my point of view, the first half-year was OK, but I want to play more in the second.

"[Getting left out under Mourinho] wasn't that easy to understand, but I have expected it with the big squad we have. I think of it as a learning process."

Mourinho departed Stamford Bridge for the second time last month in the wake of Chelsea's disastrous start to the season and what technical director Michael Emenalo referred to as "palpable discord" that had developed between the manager and his players, but Rahman has said he had no personal issue with the Portuguese.

"I liked him from the moment we met and every player should have a coach like him," he added. "I felt really sorry for him because he tried everything to get us back on track, but he did not have any luck. Often we did not play that bad, had the better stats but left the pitch empty handed."

Asked about the impact of Hiddink, Rahman said: "He didn't really change that much. But all of a sudden, things are getting better. He held out the prospect of more appearances to me when I continue to step on the gas in training."
