Chelsea eager to sign Willian to new long-term contract - sources

Chelsea are set to offer new contract to Brazilian star Willian to ward off potential interest in the player, sources have told ESPN FC.

Willian has arguably been Chelsea's shining light so far this season. The difficult campaign for the reigning Premier League champions continued Saturday in a 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the Brittannia Stadium.

The 27-year-old was expected to see his first-team chances limited this season following the arrival of Pedro from Barcelona in the summer, but Willian has fought to nail down a regular place in the starting XI and become a key member of Jose Mourinho's side.

The attacking midfielder is Chelsea's top scorer this season with five goals, including the vital late winner against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League in midweek.

Willian's contribution during the difficult period at Stamford Bridge has seen the club's hierarchy make securing the player's future at Chelsea a top priority.

Talks over a new deal have been dragging on for some time and Chelsea are determined to reward Willian for his success with a new improved deal.

Willian joined Chelsea in the summer of 2013 from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala after Chelsea snatched him from under the noses of Tottenham.

The Brazil international has just over two years to run on his current contract and Chelsea want to get him on a long-term deal to fend off any potential interest.

Willian's showings this season have not gone unnoticed among Europe's elite this season, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain admirers of the skilful set-piece specialist.
