Diego Costa fit for Chelsea return vs. Aston Villa after serving 3-game ban

Chelsea forward Diego Costa will be available again versus Aston Villa having served a retrospective three-match suspension following his altercation with Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny at Stamford Bridge.

Costa, 27, was banned for three matches for violent conduct following Chelsea's 2-0 win against Arsenal on Sept. 19.

As the game approached half-time, Costa appeared to twice rake his hands across Koscielny's face before chest-bumping him to the ground.

Arsenal defender Gabriel then came over to defend his teammate, and he and Costa received yellow cards following a confrontation. A minute later, the Arsenal centre-back was sent off for flicking a boot at the Chelsea player.

The FA decided to revoke Gabriel's red card, while Costa was banned having denied a charge over the Koscielny incident, which was not seen by referee Mike Dean.

Costa was not involved for Spain during the recent international break, so used the extra time to help sharpen his fitness after suffering ongoing injury problems since his arrival from Atletico Madrid last year.

"It has been really important for me. I have been able to train with my own specific schedule to help me get better and better," Costa told Chelsea TV ahead of the Blues welcoming Villa to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

"The sessions have been good and I have been able to benefit from being here. I have been working on what I needed to work on and I am happy about that."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said following Costa's ban: "If I bring examples, if I go deep and if I bring feelings into the discussion a big suspension will be waiting for me and I don't want that.

"The team doesn't need that, the team lost an important player for three matches and I don't think they need to lose their manager.

"Every time you lose a player it's not good for the team. It's easier to accept an injury but this kind of situation goes much more deeper in feelings and the team is hurt."

Costa missed Chelsea's 4-1 Capital One Cup triumph at Walsall on Sept. 23, a 2-2 draw at Newcastle three days later and a 3-1 home defeat to Southampton on Oct. 3.

The defending Premier League champions currently sit 16th in the table with just eight points from eight games, and trail table-toppers Manchester City by eight.

Chelsea's next opponents Villa have also started the season poorly, sitting in the relegation zone with four points and only one win from eight matches.
