Pedro leaving Barcelona for Chelsea showed ambition - Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says he has been impressed with the ambition shown by Pedro after the winger chose to join Chelsea from Barcelona.

Pedro, 28, signed a four-year deal after the Blues agreed a £21.4 million (€30m) fee with Barcelona after insisting that he wanted to gain more first-team action.

Chelsea have also signed left-back Baba Rahman from Augsburg for £21m and Mourinho is pleased to have added to his squad after a poor start to the season which has seen them draw one and lose one of their two games.

"I am happy that Rahman and Pedro have joined us," Mourinho told a news conference. "This week we got a very good young left-back with potential and one of the best attacking players in the world.

"I am also impressed that Pedro has left a team that he loves, because it shows ambition. I like that.

"Pedro was ready to leave the club of his dreams, the club of his heart. When players want to leave Barca or Real Madrid, I always put a question mark, because they might change their mind.

"He's played with [Lionel] Messi, all these stars... but he wants more. I'm really happy with this attitude."

Pedro chose Chelsea over Manchester United, although the Old Trafford outfit claimed that they pulled out of the deal, but Mourinho was not concerned with taking a player away from their rivals.

"I don't want to say we won, Man United lost," he said. "That's not the point. The point is that Pedro is a player we like a lot.

"We have got one of the best attacking players in the world. A player with lots of experience and the desire to leave a giant club.

"I only want to beat Man United on the pitch. Our job is not to get a player that another club wants, but to get players that we want."

Unlike many of his peers, Mourinho also backed the transfer window starting after the Premier League season had begun.

"I call it the opportunity window," he added. "Every team can lose players, but it is an opportunity to get players until the last moment."

Meanwhile, Mourinho has downplayed his supposed trouble with managers whose names begin with the letter "P" ahead of Sunday's meeting with Tony Pulis' West Brom.

Pulis has been responsible for two of Mourinho's last six league defeats, with the other four coming against Manuel Pellegrini, Mauricio Pochettino, Alan Pardew and Gus Poyet.

The Chelsea boss, though, said he was looking to a more positive omen after Chelsea drew 2-2 with Swansea in their Premier League opener.

Asked about his troubles with bosses whose names begin with "P," he said: "I didn't even think about it, but I wouldn't mind to go to the superstitious side of the game.

"I never win against a P, and seasons where I start with a 2-2 at home, I win the Treble. Porto, Inter v Bari, 2-2 against Swansea..."

Mourinho began the 2002-03 season with FC Porto by drawing 2-2 with Belenenses before winning all three trophies available -- the league, cup and UEFA Cup.

He then did much the same at Inter seven years later, although the Italian side actually drew 1-1 with Bari at the San Siro before doing on to win the league, cup and Champions League.
