Chelsea's John Terry: I want to carry on playing for as long as possible

Chelsea captain John Terry has told Sky Sports he wants to carry on playing for as long as possible as he looked ahead to the club's Premier League title defence.

Terry, 34, said he wanted to emulate former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs, who called time on his outstanding career at the age of 40.

He said he had been stepping up his workload and eating the right foods in order to prolong his paying days for as long as he could.

"In the last four or five years I've done a lot of extra work, not just at the training ground," he added.

"Putting the effort in the gym, training ground, off the pitch and eating the right food -- I'm hoping to carry on as a long as possible.

"There's an opportunity you see with players like Giggs of playing until a very big age."

Last month, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hailed Terry's form last season as "phenomenal" after admitting he had been concerned the captain could be "finished" at the club.

Terry was an ever-present as Chelsea won the title and was also named in the PFA team of the season for the first time since 2005-06.

"When I came, I came with that question mark: 'Which John am I going to find?' What can he do? Can he improve? Can he become close to the John I know?" Mourinho told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview.

"And last season was phenomenal. Phenomenal. I think the best season."
