Thibaut Courtois hails 'new era,' hopes to match Cech's Chelsea trophy haul

Thibaut Courtois has hailed a "new era" of Chelsea goalkeeping, and revealed his hopes of matching departed keeper Petr Cech's accomplishments at Stamford Bridge.

Courtois moved from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea in the summer of 2014 and immediately became Jose Mourinho's first-choice between the posts, supplanting the the long-serving Czech international.

After a season in the shadows, Cech exited Chelsea for a lead role at Arsenal at the end of last month, leaving behind a legacy of winning the Belgian international aspires to emulate.

"I hope to win as many trophies as I can," Courtois told the Times on Thursday. "What Petr did with Chelsea was something great, alongside Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry. Now it's the new era. I am a new player, another goalkeeper and I'm going a different way. What Petr did with Chelsea was exceptional, but I hope to get as many trophies as he did."

Chelsea signed Asmir Begovic from Stoke City to deputise for Courtois in Cech's absence this season. And although Begovic will wear the No. 1 jersey, with Courtois keeping the No. 13 he wore last season, there's no doubt the Bosnia-Herzegovina international is the back-up.

Of Begovic's arrival, which got off to a rocky start in a recent friendly against the New York Red Bulls, Courtois believes Chelsea won't drop a level at the position, and says the Bosnia-Herzegovina man will pick up where Cech left off.

"It's the same as last year for me," he said. "I started the preseason thinking as a No. 1 and trying to get myself ready for the first game.

"There is no difference in having Petr behind me or Asmir. They're both great goalkeepers and I know I have to play well and that is what I'm trying to do.

"We saw last season that having another good goalkeeper is very good because Petr saved us a lot of points and helped us to secure the Premier League title."
