Chelsea signing Asmir Begovic says he was given no guarantees of playing

Asmir Begovic admitted he had been given no guarantees of game time after he completed his move from Stoke to Chelsea.

With Thibaut Courtois firmly established as Chelsea's first choice keeper, Begovic appears to have swapped life as a first choice keeper in the Premier League for a role as a regular bench warmer.

In an interview with the Chelsea website, Begovic offered an insight into his discussions with Blues manager Jose Mourinho, as the 28-year-old confirmed he does not know how many games he will play for his new club.

"He explained what he expects, what the club expects and told me what it means to be part of Chelsea Football Club," Begovic said when asked about his discussions with Mourinho. "I was very much attracted to the whole challenge, for me that was the biggest thing.

"He didn't make any guarantees; it's just about coming in here and working hard. I need to earn my place and show my qualities. I'm confident I can make an impact. Being part of a team that wins trophies is what it's all about, I think that was the next step for me in my career and it's certainly something the manager can help me with.

"My main aims are to get myself settled in quickly and show everybody what I can do in training and matches. Hopefully I can play as many games as possible and contribute to the success of the team, they are ultimately the goals for next season and beyond. I just want to impress as much as I can."

Begovic went on to suggest the idea of being part of the Chelsea squad that should be competing in all the top competitions next season meant a move to Stamford Bridge was always his first-choice option.

"This is one of the best clubs in the world and it's a dream for me to sign," he added. "Once I knew Chelsea were interested and after speaking to Jose Mourinho at length, I knew this was where I wanted to be. It feels amazing and I'm absolutely thrilled.

"This was always my preferred destination. Leaving Stoke was difficult because I had some great times and shared some great memories with the people there. I really enjoyed being part of that club but I'm just glad everything worked out and that I'm here now and ready to go.

"The facilities are fantastic, absolutely world-class. It will be a privilege to work here each and every day. These facilities can only help you as a player, there are no excuses for not working hard and improving your game all the time. I'm excited about getting going.

"I'm just looking forward to being surrounded by world-class players each and every day. The defenders at the club are fantastic and Thibaut Courtois is a world-class goalkeeper. I'm definitely excited about playing with these guys."

Begovic will fly out to America with the Chelsea squad later this month ahead of games against New York Red Bulls, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
