Jose Mourinho excited by Chelsea's Stamford Bridge expansion plans

Jose Mourinho has welcomed news that Chelsea are planning to expand Stamford Bridge and believes the club have built up a fan base that would fill a larger stadium.

Reports have suggested that Chelsea are planning to rebuild sections of their home ground to take its capacity up to around 60,000, allowing them to generate the kind of matchday revenue currently enjoyed by clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is pushing forward with plans to increase the seating numbers at Stamford Bridge, with the West London club needing to generate more revenue as they look to comply with UEFA's financial fair play rules.

After watching his friend and tennis star Rafael Nadal lose in the opening round of the Aegon Championships in London, Mourinho told BBC Sport that he was pleased about the plans to increase the size of Chelsea's stadium.

"I think it's the next step for Chelsea. Chelsea won four Premier Leagues in the last decade, we've become a huge club. Stamford Bridge is always full and we feel that need [to expand]," Mourinho said.

"I trust Mr Abramovich and the board. I don't think too much about these details -- my focus is the work on the pitch. We will have capacity for more fans and I think that is what Chelsea is waiting for."
