Chelsea took another step towards securing the Premier League title, with Manchester City dropping points again. (1:11)

Chelsea look certain to set a new record for the amount of time spent at the top of the Premier League, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Jose Mourinho's men hold a commanding seven-point lead, with the added cushion of a game in hand at bottom-of-the-table Leicester City.

The Blues have already been top for 230 days, with Tottenham the only team to briefly wrest first place away from them at the start of the season, and that was only on goal difference.

Since August 30 it has been Chelsea's name at the summit, and if they are still there on May 13 -- when there will still be two rounds of Premier League games left to be played -- they will break the record.

Manchester United sat on top of the table for 262 days in the 1993-94 season, the second after the inception of the Premier League. But if, as now seems highly likely, Chelsea are still top when the season finishes on May 24 they will have held the position for 274 days.

The Chelsea champions of 2005-06 were top for 257 days, while United's title winners of 2006-07 led for 250 days. Even though Arsenal's "Invincibles" went the entire 2003-04 season unbeaten, they were top for 216 days -- which only ranks as the sixth best total.

Mourinho will not be able to beat his own record for Premier League points in a season however, as that stands at 95 from 2004-05 and the maximum they can amass after the remaining eight fixtures is 94.
