Jose Mourinho says Chelsea need few changes, hails Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea expect to do business this summer in order to improve their squad, but the manager feels they don't need much change and expects youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek to compete for a starting place next season.

When it was put to Mourinho that reports claimed Chelsea will have a significant transfer budget in the next window, the Portuguese said his team do not need much because of the quality of the squad -- but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to improve, and expects sales.

"Our transfer policy doesn't need a lot of funds, because we don't need a lot of things," Mourinho said. "We like our squad, we like our players. With a couple of exceptions, we have a young squad. Once more, I think our transfer policy will be nice and quiet and will be also a consequence of the players we sell, and funds we make.

"I think we are getting great credibility with players we sell because we sell good players. Let's see what happens.

"If you ask me I am happy, I am happy. If you say zero movements in or out, I don't believe [it], because you always want to improve and there is always changes to be made."

One change will come from within, as Mourinho expects 19-year-old Loftus-Cheek to compete for a starting place in midfield. Mourinho talked about the youngster in the most promising terms, saying he would feature more this season were it not for the fact the title race was still open.

"I was saying, I think Ruben will not just be a first-team player, he will be a player to compete directly for a position. I don't do it now because I don't think it's the moment to do. It's the moment for his evolution, his protection. If we were fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, he would be in for sure.

"Ruben is a player that next season I expect him, not just to play a few times, but I expect him to compete for a place in the team because of his evolution."

Though Chelsea are said to be interested in Juventus' Paul Pogba for the same position, Mourinho said their transfer business would not obstruct Lofts-Cheek's promotion.

"I don't speak about Pogba or other players. The only thing I can tell you is look to our midfield players and between [Cesc] Fabrgeas, [Nemanja] Matic, Ramires, Ruben -- [John Obi] Mikel is injured -- we have a good group. I believe a lot in Ruben. Next season the squad will be made in a way where Ruben is not a number, where is a player to compete for a position."
