Christian Pulisic has resumed training with Chelsea ahead of Sunday's match at winless Newcastle, the English Premier League club said Thursday.

Pulisic, 23, has not featured since Aug. 14, when he scored in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Crystal Palace to open the league season.

The American forward injured an ankle while on international duty in early September against Honduras -- his sixth significant injury in his two-plus years at Chelsea.

Chelsea posted a brief update on returning players -- Pulisic, N'Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta -- along with photos of them at training.

Pulisic's injury was expected to keep him out for only 10 days, but a series of setbacks has kept him out much longer, including missing all the U.S. matches during the October international window.

It is unclear if Pulisic will be available for a crunch set of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers in November, with matches looming at home against rivals Mexico on Nov. 12 and away to Jamaica on Nov. 16.

Jamaica's soccer federation originally announced the Nov. 12 match would be played without fans in attendance due to local government restrictions relating to COVID-19, but later reversed course to allow up to 5,000 fully vaccinated fans to attend the game at Kingston's Independence Park.
