Roy Keane turns down Celtic job

Roy Keane has rejected the opportunity to take charge at Celtic and will remain in his position as Republic of Ireland assistant coach.

Keane held talks with Bhoys owner Dermot Desmond last week over the vacant manager's job at Celtic Park, with Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill suggesting the former Manchester United player could be set to make the switch.

However, the Football Association of Ireland confirmed via Twitter that Keane will remain working under O'Neill and will travel with the squad to the United States on Wednesday for friendlies against Portugal and Costa Rica.

A report in Ireland's Sunday World newspaper said Keane was tempted by the offer of another job that would allow him to remain in his post with Republic of Ireland while working in the Premier League.

Celtic officials are now set to resume their search for a successor to Neil Lennon, who opted to leave the club last month.

Former Bolton boss Owen Coyle, ex-United manager David Moyes and former West Brom head coach Steve Clarke are reported to be on their shortlist, with Keane's decision opening the door to fresh candidates.

The news will come as a welcome boost to O'Neill, who had spoken last week about his fear of losing his assistant ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers, which start in September.
