Celtic have confirmed they will appeal the three-match suspension given to Scott Brown following his red card against Barcelona.

Brown, 28, was red-carded for violent conduct after kicking out at Neymar during the 1-0 Champions League defeat against Barca and originally banned for one game.

However, following a meeting of UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body on Thursday, Brown has seen his suspension extended meaning he will be absent for the double-header against Ajax and the home game against AC Milan before returning for the trip to the Nou Camp, Celtic’s final group stage game.

A statement from UEFA said: "UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Committee has suspended Celtic FC's Scott Brown for the next three UEFA competition matches for which he would otherwise be eligible following his dismissal in the UEFA Champions League matchday two fixture against FC Barcelona in Glasgow."

In an interview with STV, Celtic responded, saying: "The club finds this to be excessive and they will be appealing against the decision."

Should Celtic succeed in their appeal they could overturn the subsequent two-match portion of the ban, although the one-match suspension will still stand.
