Lennon interested in Dunne signing

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is considering signing defender Richard Dunne, while he has also confirmed his interest in Vitoria Guimaraes striker Amido Balde.

Richard Dunne has returned to the Ireland squad.
Richard Dunne did not feature at all for Aston Villa last season

Dunne, 33, is a free agent after having been released by Aston Villa - due to manager Paul Lambert's preference for focusing on youth - and is on the lookout for a new club.

The Ireland international failed to make a single appearance for Villa last season due to injury, but did make his comeback for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side in the win against Georgia on Sunday.

While Lennon concedes that signing Dunne would not fit with his transfer policy, he has said that the player’s experience could prove to be invaluable for the Bhoys.

"We have made no formal or informal movements as yet," Lennon told the Daily Record. "Richard has had injury problems and hasn't played for a long time so I don't know what kind of condition he is in.

"And the way we have been signing players over the years, he would fall out of that category, but he is a player I have known a long time and have always liked. We have also signed guys like Daniel Majstorovic before and it is always good to have one or two experienced players in."

Lennon also revealed that the Scottish champions are contemplating making a bid for Balde, 22, who has one year left to run on his contract with Guimaraes.

"Balde is a big striker and has the physical attributes we are looking for. But he is interesting other clubs as well,” Lennon said.

"We haven't pushed the button on any player but we have a number of options in each position. What we will try to do is bring some players in for June 20 when we start pre-season training."
