CAS to rule on Cardiff's €6m Sala payment after appeal following FIFA demands

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will decide on the final outcome in the ongoing legal battle between Cardiff and Nantes over the signing of Emiliano Sala.

Cardiff signed Sala from Nantes for £15 million in January but the Argentinian was killed in a plane crash when his private aircraft disappeared over the English Channel as he was flying to the Welsh capital.

FIFA had ordered Cardiff to pay Nantes €6m or face a three-window transfer ban, stating that the transfer had been completed at the time of Sala's death.

However, Cardiff claimed the circumstances surrounding Sala's death, in a plane organised by an agent who brokered the transfer, meant Nantes were liable for damages caused to them and appealed to CAS.

"The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered the appeal filed by Cardiff City Football Club against Football Club de Nantes in relation to the decision issued by the Bureau of the FIFA Players' Status Committee on Oct. 30, 2019 (the Challenged Decision)," CAS statement read.

"In such a decision, Cardiff City FC was ordered to pay €6m to FC Nantes in relation to the transfer between the clubs of the player Emiliano Sala.

"Cardiff City FC seeks to have the Challenged Decision set aside and requests the CAS to declare that no amount shall be payable by Cardiff City FC to FC Nantes. In accordance with the Code of Sports-related Arbitration, the rules governing CAS procedures, an appeal arbitration procedure has been opened.

"The counsels for Cardiff City FC and for FC Nantes have agreed to set an ad hoc procedural calendar. A hearing is likely to be fixed in spring 2020. A final award is not expected before June 2020."
