Manchester City exit Capital One Cup with Newcastle loss

Capital One Cup holders Manchester City were dumped out of the competition as a resurgent Newcastle United booked their place in the Capital One Cup quarterfinals.

Newcastle took an early lead after Fernandinho lost possession, allowing Rolando Aarons to burst through the defence and supply a cool finish past Willy Caballero.

City's problems worsened soon afterwards when David Silva, injured in a collision with Ryan Taylor minutes early, had to be substituted.

The hosts threatened an equaliser for some time but, with 15 minutes to play, Moussa Sissoko produced a stunning individual effort to secure his side's progress.

Tottenham Hotspur claimed an unconvincing victory at home to Championship strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion.

Spurs took the lead early in the second half when Erik Lamela slid home in a match that had been delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic congestion.

Harry Kane doubled their advantage when he arrived first to slot home at the far post.

Southampton continued their run of fine form with a hard-fought victory at Stoke City.

Saints took the lead with a stunning Graziano Pelle strike after just six minutes, and Shane Long doubled their advantage on the half-hour.

Stoke -- beaten 1-0 by Southampton at the weekend -- hit back through Steven Nzonzi soon after the break and then Mame Biram Diouf, who was able to head home at the far post following a corner.

However, parity did not last long, with Southampton restoring their lead through Pelle's instinctive finish after Stoke striker Peter Crouch had been dismissed after collecting two yellow cards.

On Tuesday, Chelsea, Liverpool, Derby County, Bournemouth and Sheffield United had also secured their places in the last eight.
