Positives to take from expansive Stoke's loss to Southampton

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes reacts to his team's 1-0 loss to red-hot Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium.

Football widows the world over will be familiar with the post-match reaction of their loved ones' following a defeat: the disappointment, anger and inability to enjoy anything for an unspecified period -- usually the remainder of that day, if not beyond.

Sometimes, though, that trend is overcome by a positive reaction -- and that's exactly what should happen following Stoke's 3-2 loss to Southampton on Wednesday. The Saints are without doubt the best side Stoke have seen this term; their movement...

Swansea see red after succession of questionable referee decisions

Swansea City manager Garry Monk highlights the questionable refereeing decisions his team has faced in the past week.

In the wake of Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Swansea in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night, many headline writers seem to have decided "world-class striker scores a goal" is somehow a newsworthy revelation.

The European Club Association is proposing an April-May timeframe for the World Cup, arguing it would be less disruptive to the season than FIFA president Sepp Blatter's favoured November-December solution for avoiding playing in the fiercest summer heat in Qatar.

The ECA outline for an April 28-May 29 tournament envisages...

Ryan Taylor: Newcastle return after 2 years at Manchester City a 'fairytale'

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini stated that his side are lacking confidence following their premature exit from the Capital One Cup.

Ryan Taylor described Newcastle United's win at Manchester City in the Capital One Cup as a "fairytale" after making his first appearance for the Magpies for more than two years.

Taylor, 30, last played for Newcastle in August 2012 before back-to-back cruciate knee ligament injuries kept the versatile midfielder out of first-team action for 26 months.

Saints looked in control at 2-0 up at half-time against the team they beat in the Premier League on Saturday, but the Potters fought back and levelled through Mame Biram Diouf with eight minutes remaining.

Stoke appeared to be the more likely winners at that stage but Peter Crouch saw red for two yellow cards in less than a minute.
