Socceroos winger Tommy Oar returns to Brisbane Roar in A-League

Australia international winger Tommy Oar has ended speculation about his club future by returning to his former A-League club the Brisbane Roar.

It's a boost for fading Brisbane, who are winless in their last three games, and for the Socceroos ahead of March's important AFC 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

By signing until the end of the 2017-18 season, 24-year-old Oar has emerged from a five-week limbo period since leaving English second tier club, Ipswich Town in January.

Queensland-born Oar, who was a member of Australia's winning 2015 Asian Cup squad and appeared at the 2014 World Cup, played for Brisbane Roar between 2008-10 as a teenager.

He enjoyed his greatest success as a regular first team player with Dutch club, FC Utrecht, playing in 105 games and scoring 14 goals over five years.

Since leaving Ipswich, he'd been linked to other A-League clubs, as well as Chinese Super League outfit Hangzhou Greentown, who signed Oar's international teammate Tim Cahill last week.

"Tommy is a quality player with a proven record in top-flight football," Roar's Football Operations Manager Craig Moore told the club's official website.

"His signing continues head coach John Aloisi's intentions to bring the best and brightest players to the club."

Having not played for more than a month, Oar won't be fit in time for Brisbane's home match against Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday.

But, with 34 caps and four goals for Australia since 2010, he is likely to be part of Ange Postecoglou's international squad for the home games against Tajikistan (Adelaide, March 24) and Jordan (Sydney, March 29).
