Inter's Miranda to captain Brazil for World Cup qualifying matches

Inter Milan defender Miranda was named to captain Brazil for this week's World Cup qualifying matches, although coach Tite has said that he may name another captain for future matches.

Miranda takes the captain's armband from Neymar, who led Brazil to their first Olympic gold last month in Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazil striker said that he would step down as Brazil captain after scoring the winning penalty in the 5-4 shootout victory over Germany.

Tite, who replaced Carlos Dunga after Brazil crashed out in the Copa America Centenario and is facing his first senior team test in CONMEBOL qualifying for Russia, said he had many options for captain, but felt that Miranda had the respect of the team.

"There are a lot of players who bring much to the captaincy, respect is one quality, as an example," Tite told reporters. "Miranda fits that profile, as do several other players. It is possible that in other matches, other players may be named to be captain."

He confirmed that his starters would be Alisson, Daniel Alves, Miranda, Marquinhos, Marcelo, Casemiro, Paulinho, Renato Augusto, Wilian, Gabriel Jesus and Neymar.

Miranda said he was honoured to lead the team as they face Ecuador in Quito on Thursday and Colombia in Manaus on Sept. 6.

"The Selecao have many leaders, but once again I am happy to represent these leaders in the role of captain," the centre-back said.

Brazil have struggled in qualification thus far, sitting in sixth place with nine points, and set to face Ecuador, who are joint leaders in the CONMEBOL table with 13 points along with Uruguay. The match will take place 9,000 feet above sea level in Quito.

Five days later the Selecao face Colombia, who beat them at the Copa America in 2015 and were only defeated by them at the 2014 World Cup by a penalty shootout.

"We will always have challenges," Tite said. "But we can't think like that. It is a challenge. I know that in playing here we are facing a rival who has four points more than we do. But we are going to give it our all and play a good match."

Tite said he would use his players in their regular positions.

"I am going to play each player where he plays with his club," he said. "I heard [Mario] Zagallo say exactly this the other day, that the great challenge as coach is to figure out where each player feels comfortable playing. That is my challenge, to figure out how all the pieces fit and find the balance."
