Brazil's David Luiz to miss Venezuela game due to knee injury

David Luiz has been ruled out of Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Venezuela on Tuesday with a knee injury.

Luiz, 28, was forced off in the first half of Thursday's 2-0 qualifying defeat to Chile after picking up a knock following a challenge from Eduardo Vargas.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed that the Paris Saint-Germain defender has now departed the Selecao squad, along with Gremio goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe, who also sustained an injury.

"Defender David Luiz and goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe have left the squad," a CBF statement read.

"They were examined and assessed by doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, and it was found they will not recover in time to face Venezuela at the Arena Castelao in Fortaleza.

"No replacement for the two players will be called up."

PSG will be sweating on the fitness of Luiz with a key Champions League clash against Real Madrid taking place on Oct. 21.
