Emir Spahic set for Bosnia-Herzegovina return once again

Former Bosnia-Herzegovina captain Emir Spahic is set for his international comeback after being called up by coach Safet Susic for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier in Israel.

Spahic, 34, announced his retirement from international football in August following a disappointing World Cup in Brazil this summer.

However, the Bayer Leverkusen player was called up by Susic in September amid the controversy surrounding Franck Ribery's decision to bring an end to his career with France.

At the time, UEFA president Michel Platini threatened Ribery with a three-match suspension for his club Bayern Munich should he refuse a Les Bleus call-up.

Spahic, therefore, had to join up with the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad during the last international break, before proving to be unavailable for selection due to fitness problems as his nation drew first with Wales and then Belgium.

Ahead of the run of Euro 2016 qualifiers, meanwhile, Leverkusen commented that "as far as we know Emir has retired [from international football]."

But Spahic, who recently signed a new Leverkusen contract, finds himself once again in the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad, and he could now finally win his 78th cap against Israel on Sunday.
