U.S.'s Fabian Johnson extends contract with Borussia Monchengladbach

M'Gladbach and U.S. midfielder Fabian Johnson left his side's Europa League match against Schalke after just 16 minutes due to injury.

U.S. international Fabian Johnson has extended his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach by two years to 2020.

Johnson, who is nearing a comeback after nine matches out with a thigh injury, has 10 goals and set up 12 more in 69 Bundesliga games for Gladbach since joining from league rivals Hoffenheim in 2014.

"It's an amazing feeling to continue being part of this fantastic club," Johnson said in a statement. "After moving here from Hoffenheim three years ago, my aim was to continue my own development and to play in Europe: I've since managed both.

"From that point of view, I'm very pleased to be able to continue my journey with Borussia."

Sporting director Max Eberl said: "With his versatility on the pitch and his calm, reliable character in the dressing room, Fabian has developed into a leading player within the team.''

Johnson, 29, has made 54 appearances for the United States. He previously played for Wolfsburg and second-division side 1860 Munich.
