Andre Schubert signs long-term Borussia Monchengladbach contract

Borussia Monchengladbach coach Andre Schubert has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2019, the Foals announced on Tuesday.

Schubert, 45, took charge of Gladbach following a dismal start to the 2015-16 season in which previous coach Lucien Favre recorded five defeats from the opening five matches and left after more than four largely successful years.

Schubert, who had joined the club ahead of the 2015-16 season as reserve team coach, managed to turn the Foals season around. Although they finished bottom of their Champions League group, they returned to the competition by eliminating Young Boys in the playoffs in August after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga.

"He led the team into Champions League, and we won 65 points in his 34 Bundesliga matches in charge. That's an outstanding record," Max Eberl, Gladbach's sporting director told the club's official website.

Schubert's current deal at Borussia Park was set to expire at the end of this term. With an average of 1.91 points per match he has the highest point average in the club's Bundesliga history.

Prior to his appointment at Gladbach, Schubert coached the second-tier clubs SC Paderborn and FC St. Pauli.
