Johnson to move to Moenchengladbach

Borussia Moenchengladbach are to sign U.S. international Fabian Johnson on a free transfer from Hoffenheim in the summer.

Fabian Johnson
Fabian Johnson has signed a contract with Borussia Moenchengladbach  until 2018.

Johnson, 26, who joined Hoffenheim from Wolfsburg in 2011, has signed a contract with Moenchengladbach until 2018.

“Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player, moreover he is a free agent, who can play at left-back and at left-midfield. We are delighted that he has opted to play for us,” Moenchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl told the club’s official website.

Earlier this month, Hoffenheim announced that despite their best efforts to keep Johnson, the versatile left-footed player would be seeking a new challenge after three years at the club.

“We’ve fought for Fabian’s signature since the summer, but he has decided to leave us,” Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol said in early February.

The full-back had been linked with a switch to Moenchengladbach for a while, as the Bundelisga club seek to strengthen their squad.

At the weekend, following the 2-2 draw between his future and current clubs, Johnson kept the media in the dark about his future.

He told reporters that the Gladbach match had “not been different to any other match.”

Johnson added: “I can’t say right now where I’ll be playing next season.”

Earlier on Monday, kicker reported that clubs from England and Italy had made a last-minute move to lure the Munich-born player away from Germany for the first time in his career.

Johnson has made 91 Bundesliga appearances, scoring six goals and creating a further 12. He has won 18 caps for the U.S. national team and is expected to make their 2014 World Cup squad.
