New Borussia Dortmund setback as Mario Gotze sidelined with injury

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has been ruled out for the rest of 2017 after suffering an ankle injury in the 4-4 draw with Schalke.

Gotze, 25, suffered a partial ligament tear in his right ankle when he was fouled by Daniel Caligiuri, BVB said on Monday.

On their official Twitter account, the club wrote: "That's bitter! Mario Gotze is set for a six-week spell on the sidelines with a partial ligament tear in his right ankle. Get well soon, Mario!"

Having missed large parts of the first half of the year with injuries, Gotze has made 15 appearances this season and maintained his form amid BVB's downturn.

He scored his first goal of the year on Saturday with only the second headed strike of his Dortmund career.

But the Germany international was later replaced by Gonzalo Castro in an extraordinary game that saw Schalke come back from 4-0 down to level late on.

Dortmund have not won a Bundesliga match since late September, dropping from first to fifth in the table.
