Mario Gotze to return to Borussia Dortmund training after long illness

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has confirmed he return to training on Friday following months on the sidelines with a metabolic disorder.

Gotze, 25, made his most recent appearance for Dortmund in a draw at Mainz in January, and was diagnosed with the disorder around a month later.

Following reports in recent weeks that the Germany international was back to full fitness, he wrote on Instagram: "During the last few months I have gone through a successful treatment and I am back on track now.

"Tomorrow, I will start with the third stage of my recovery programme. This means I will complete the performance test and begin training with the team soon."

Gotze also thanked Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc for their trust in him "during this difficult time of recovery," adding: "See you on the pitch!"

Having returned to Dortmund last summer after three years with Bayern Munich, Gotze said he was "very proud" of his BVB teammates for winning the DFB Pokal in May.
