Borussia Dortmund's Roman Burki out until winter break with broken hand

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016 after breaking his hand.

Burki suffered the injury in Saturday's 1-0 win over Bayern Munich and is set to undergo an operation that will leave him on the sidelines for eight weeks.

"BVB goalkeeper Roman Burki broke his hand in the Bundesliga game against FC Bayern Munich (1:0) and will need an operation," Dortmund said on their official website. "The operation will take place in the Knappschaft Hospital in Brackel and will mean he will be out for up to eight weeks."

Burki's injury means 36-year-old Roman Weidenfeller is set to play Dortmund's seven games before the winter break begins on Dec. 20.

The former Germany international has played in three competitive matches this season and helped the club to a penalty shootout win over Union Berlin in the DFB Pokal in October.

Weidenfeller's current contract expires in the summer but the club announced last week that they want to hold contract talks with the keeper, who has been at the club since 2002.

He has so far appeared in 341 league games for Dortmund and made a further 81 appearances in other competitions. Only Michael Zorc, who now works as BVB's sporting director, has played in more league games for Borussia Dortmund.
