Borussia Dortmund looking to extend Julian Weigl's contract - Michael Zorc

Borussia Dortmund are hoping to tie midfielder Julian Weigl to a long-term contract, according to the club's sporting director Michael Zorc.

Weigl, 21, joined Dortmund from 1860 Munich on a four-year deal last summer for a reported €2.5 million.

The Germany international's performances since then have not gone unnoticed -- with Real Madrid and Manchester City both having been credited with an interest -- and so BVB hope to fight off the competition by offering him a new contract.

"We want to follow Julian's outstanding development," Zorc told Bild. "We have the wish to tie him to a long-term contract. But we are not pressed for time because he feels extremely comfortable here."

According to Bild, Dortmund want to open talks with Weigl following the ongoing international break and plan to increase his wages from €1.5m to €4m including bonuses.

Dortmund this summer lost Ilkay Gundogan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mats Hummels, who were all set to enter the final year of their contracts at the Westfalenstadion.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the last big name to renew his Dortmund contract when he signed an extension until 2020 in July 2015.
