Dortmund to return for Osasuna's Mikel Merino in summer - Watzke

Borussia Dortmund will return in the summer to buy Osasuna midfielder Mikel Merino, according to club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Merino, 19, already agreed terms with the Bundesliga side, according to kicker, but Osasuna pulled the plug on the deal as they were not willing to sell one of their key players as they attempt to clinch promotion to La Liga this season.

"We'll try again in the summer," Watzke told Sky 90 on Sunday, adding that in spite of the club's failure to reinforce the squad, he believes Dortmund "have a good team."

In January, Dortmund offloaded Jonas Hofmann to Borussia Monchengladbach and Adnan Januzaj returned to Manchester United following a disappointing loan spell at the Westfalenstadion.

However, coach Thomas Tuchel felt the squad might not be big enough to compete in the Europa League, DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga, and several players had already been close to joining the club.

Last week, Mainz ended on Dortmund's deal for Yunus Malli, despite already agreeing financial terms, while a move for Atletico Madrid youngster Oliver Torres also fell apart because of differences of opinion about the structure of the transfer -- Dortmund wanted to take Torres on loan, and include an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer, but the La Liga side were not willing to strike a deal according to kicker.

The squad do have players returning, however. At the weekend, 17-year-old American Christian Pulisic made his Dortmund debut, full-back Erik Durm returned following an injury-plagued 2015, and midfielder Moritz Leitner played his first Bundesliga match since May 2013.
