Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang targeting African Footballer of the Year award

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has said his scoring run for Borussia Dortmund is inspired by his desire to be named African Footballer of the Year.

Aubameyang, 26, has made the shortlist for the award for a third year running following his outstanding goal-scoring form for Dortmund.

The Gabon international finished last season as Dortmund's top scorer, but in only 14 Bundesliga games this campaign he has already bettered that tally by one goal.

"I want to become African Footballer of the Year. This year, I want to win that vote by all means, and that's why I try to score in every match," Aubameyang, who has gone without a goal in only two games this Bundesliga season, said.

Last year's winner, Porto's Yacine Brahimi, was named on the African Footballer of the Year shortlist as well as three Premier League players: Swansea's Andre Ayew, Southampton's Sadio Mane and Manchester City's Yaya Toure.

The winner is set to be announced on Dec. 11.

Aubameyang's 17 goals in 14 games is the best record for any Bundesliga player since Gerd Muller's 19 from 14 matches in the 1976-77 season.
