Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Bundesliga record with Leverkusen win

Borussia Dortmund recorded the best ever start in Bundesliga history on Sunday as a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen sees them lead the German top flight with five wins from their opening five games.

In what many believed would be Dortmund's first real test of the season, the 2013 Champions League finalists recorded a comfortable home win against Leverkusen on Sunday with goals from Jonas Hofmann, Shinji Kagawa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Thomas Tuchel's side have now won 15 points and scored 18 goals in just five games, extending a new club record to 11 wins in their first 11 games in all competitions this season.

The coach took over from Jurgen Klopp this summer, who last season led Dortmund into the winter break with just 15 points and 18 goals after 17 games.

Dortmund's goal difference of plus-15 means that they have now bettered Bayern Munich's Bundesliga record from 2012. The Bavarian side also started their treble-winning season with five wins and a goal difference of plus-15, but only scored 17 goals.

It's the first time in 38 years that a Bundesliga team has scored 18 goals in the first five games of the season. Cologne achieved the feat in the 1977-1978 season by scoring 19, but also lost once.

Cologne and Bayern both went on to win the title in those respective seasons, but Matthias Ginter -- who has scored two goals and set up a further seven as Dortmund makeshift right-back this season -- does not believe that the numerous records mean BVB are title contenders just yet.

"We've only played five games," the Germany international said. "We've said before the season that we are the challengers, and that's what we still are. The Leverkusen match does not change anything. We want to continue on our path -- it's the right path, but it's a still a long way until the end of the season."

Dortmund travel to Hoffenheim on Wednesday and then host Darmstadt before facing Bayern at the Allianz Arena in early October.

The German champions have also kept their 100 percent record by beating Darmstadt on Saturday, meaning two teams have managed to win their opening five league games for the first time in Bundesliga history.

Ahead of Bayern's meeting with Wolfsburg on Tuesday, Jerome Boateng has told kicker that he believes Dortmund "are a notch better" than Dieter Hecking's DFB-Pokal winners.

"They've got a new coach, and a very strong attack, they are hungrier than last season," he said.

The centre-back also said that he was delighted to -- at least for now -- have league competitors again having won the past three titles in a row, adding: "We've also started well, have scored many goals and focus on us. But it's also good that other teams attack the top. That's good for the league and German football."

Dortmund are not the only club to break records in the new season: Ingolstadt recorded their third consecutive 1-0 away victory courtesy of an injury-time penalty at Werder Bremen -- a league record for a newly promoted team.

"It's tremendous -- little FC Ingolstadt writes Bundesliga history," coach Ralph Hasenhuttel told kicker.

Ingolstadt have already won 10 points and have so far only suffered a 4-0 defeat against Dortmund.

Ahead of hosting Hamburg on Tuesday, Hasenhuttel warned the rest of the league to not attribute his side's impressive form to an initial wave of euphoria, adding: "This wouldn't do justice to the team."
