Neven Subotic focusing on Borussia Dortmund over Serbia, says agent

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic wants to focus on his club football before returning to the Serbia squad, according to the player's agent.

Subotic, 25, was axed last week, along with Roma midfielder Adem Ljajic, from the Serbia squad by new coach Dick Advocaat, who said neither are part of his plans.

"My exchange of mails and text messages with Subotic has left no doubt that he doesn't like playing for the national team," Advocaat said.

Subotic has only just returned to the Dortmund squad this summer following an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered in November 2013.

With the defender having struggled for form recently and having found himself on the substitutes' bench for Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Hamburg, agent Stephen Kelly says his client is first determined to win his place back in Jurgen Klopp's team before turning his attention back to his international career.

"Neven wants to fully focus on BVB. There are many important games in the upcoming weeks," Kelly told Bild.

Kelly, however, added that Subotic has not entirely given up on returning to the Serbia setup in the future.

"That's just for now," he said. "Following his anterior cruciate ligament tear, it makes no sense for Neven to play match after match. He wants to return to his best first."
