Ilkay Gundogan ruled out for two weeks

Borussia Dortmund will be without Ilkay Gundogan for the next fortnight after the midfielder suffered a back injury during Germany’s 3-3 draw with Paraguay on Wednesday.

Ilkay Gundogan has struggled for fitness of late.

Gundogan, 22, had initially reported for international duty earlier this week struggling for full fitness, after missing several Dortmund training sessions. The former Nurnberg man featured in last week’s 4-0 win at Augsburg, but was taken off after 57 minutes.

Gundogan then missed Germany’s first training session at Mainz on Monday, before limping off injured on Wednesday shortly after having scored on 18 minutes.

As a result, Dortmund announced on Thursday that their midfielder will be sidelined for the next two weeks.

“His back problems, which are a result of a spinal compression, have increased, according to BVB team doctor Markus Braun,” the club said in a statement.

“That’s annoying and unnecessary,” Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke told DerWesten. “Those responsible at the national team will have asked him whether he is fit to play. And he will have said: ‘Yes’. Maybe he even felt fit. If not he did BVB and himself a bad turn.”

Dortmund next take on Eintracht Braunschweig at the Westfalenstadion on Sunday.

Gundogan’s injury could mean Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be given his competitive debut for the club.

The Armenia international suffered an ankle injury in pre-season but returned to team training over a week ago. He opted not to join up with his national team for their friendly in Albania on Wednesday, however.
