Santana eyeing up Premier League move

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Felipe Santana has admitted he is keen on a move to the Premier League.

Santana, 26, has impressed for the German champions this season, filling in for either Mats Hummels or Neven Subotic.

Despite prolonging his contract until 2014 last year, the Brazilian could be set for the Dortmund exit at the end of the season.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Santana could trigger a €2 million release clause that comes into effect after playing 20 games for the club. Recent media reports had linked the towering defender, who opened the scoring for Dortmund in their recent Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk, with a transfer to another Bundesliga club.

“I don’t think about that right now. I talked to my agent but I will only decide after this season,” he told Ruhr Nachrichten. “I have read a lot about interest from Schalke, Hamburg, Hertha Berlin or Hannover. But it is a fact that nobody has contacted me yet. There are no official offers.”

While no bids have yet to come in from the Premier League either, Santana says he would be an open for a move to England.

“Of course, Spain and Italy are interesting countries. But to be perfectly honest, for sporting reasons mainly, the Premier League is of interest. The Bundesliga is the second best league in the world,” he said. “I play there now and that is pretty good. I am nearly 27 now, 30 is not far away. I want to play in Europe a bit longer before I return to Brazil to play my final match and enjoy life at the beach.”

Although the defender was mainly used as a substitute during the first half of the season, Santana has made eight starts and played nine of Dortmund’s 11 games since the winter break.

“I was able to play more games as either Mats [Hummels] or Neven [Subotic] have been injured,” he said. “And I feel it is getting better and better as I get into my rhythm.”
