Kehl rejects Chicago Fire offer

Borussia Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl has reportedly turned down an offer from MLS club Chicago Fire, as he looks set to extend his stay at the German champions for another year.

Kehl, 32, is only contracted at Dortmund until the summer - a fact Fire were well aware of as they tried to convince the midfielder to join former Germany team-mate Arne Friedrich at the club for next season.

However, Bild are reporting that the German club are to trigger an option in the player’s contract to keep him for at least one more year.

“Sebastian is a great footballer - clear-headed, dynamic, strong in the tackle,” Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp said. “Experience makes him stand out.”

Alongside Sven Bender, Ilkay Gundogan and new signing Nuri Sahin, the former Germany international gives Dortmund several options in defensive midfield.

Kehl has started 12 Bundesliga games this season and featured in Dortmund’s first four Champions League matches - including a man of the match performance in the victory over Real Madrid.

The former Freiburg man signed for Dortmund in January 2002 and his 11 years at the club make him the longest-serving player in the current squad. He has featured in 226 Bundesliga matches in that time and was named captain of the side in 2008.

Meanwhile, kicker are reporting that centre-back Felipe Santana could leave the club at the end of the season. A €1 million release clause could be triggered once the player has made 20 appearances for Dortmund.
