Bordeaux's Jeremy Menez has surgery after horror ear injury

New Bordeaux signing Jeremy Menez has undergone surgery after he had his ear cut open during his first game for the club.

Menez, 29, was playing in Bordeaux's 3-1 friendly win over fellow Ligue 1 side Lorient on Wednesday when he was caught by the high foot of Didier Ndong in the 65th minute.

With blood pouring from the injury, Menez was replaced and Bordeaux confirmed on Thursday that the former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain player had to have an operation to piece his right ear back together.

"Jeremy was operated on on Wednesday evening under local anaesthetic in order to sew back up his ear," a club statement read.

"The length of time Jeremy Menez will be out for will depend on the healing [of the wound]."

The news is a blow both for Bordeaux and attacking midfielder Menez, who only completed his transfer from Milan on Monday.

Gabonese midfielder Ndong, 22, apologised on Thursday via a statement released by Lorient.

"I apologise fully to Jeremy Menez and to Girondins de Bordeaux after this totally involuntary aspect of the game had unfortunate consequences for the Bordeaux attacker," Ndong said in the club's press release.

"I lend him all my support for the coming days and I hope to see him back on the pitches of Ligue 1 very soon."
