Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol banned three games for confronting referee

Bordeaux coach Willy Sagnol laughed off his punishment after receiving a three-match touchline ban for his behaviour during last month's Coupe de France defeat to Nantes.

Les Girondins let the lead slip away both in normal time and extra time as they lost 4-3 in Feb. 10's last-16 clash, with Sagnol confronting the match officials at times during the contest.

A statement on the club's website read: "Due to his behaviour, Willy Sagnol was the subject of a report by referee Mr [Frank] Schneider.

"As a result, the [French Football Federation] disciplinary commission has given its verdict and Willy Sagnol is suspended for three matches from all sporting duties."

The ban means Sagnol cannot be on the field or the touchline, nor enter the referee's dressing room, for the games against Toulouse on Saturday, Bastia next weekend or Monaco on April 2.

"It was a joke that went down badly,'' Sagnol said in his news conference. "It was aimed at the referee at the end of the match, without any animosity, anger or aggression. It was a bit of fun, a story about Vaseline..."

That prompted laughter in the conference and Sagnol continued: "You see, it makes you laugh. For me, it was not insulting.

"I gave an explanation [at the FFF hearing], those who judged the case are sad or humourless people."

The ban means Sagnol cannot be on the field or the touchline, nor enter the referee's dressing room, for the games against Toulouse, Bastia next weekend or Monaco on April 2.

But he said: "They are professional players, it will not affect them at all. I will just be too far away to speak to the fourth official!"
