Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol: I could coach United States one day

Bordeaux manager Willy Sagnol has said he is not sure whether he will still be manager of the club next season and could see himself coaching an "exotic" national team like the United States one day.

Sagnol, who took over at the club in May 2014, guided Bordeaux to a sixth-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.

But having led the club to their highest points total since they won the league in 2009, Sagnol has found things more difficult this season and his side are ninth in the table.

"I have one year left on my contract," he told Le Parisien.

"But at a certain moment, if a manager has a doubt over his ability to develop his players, he should ask himself whether he should continue or not. So there will naturally be a [period of] reflection.

"Am I still the right manager for Bordeaux? With the president, we'll find a way to continue together or to separate in the best conditions. At the moment, it's too early to know what will happen in four months."

Sagnol said that if he moved on he would be "more attracted by Germany and England than by Spain" and added: "I could also one day be manager of an exotic national team, like the United States or Japan.

"That could be very stimulating on a human level and professionally."

Bordeaux finished bottom of their Europa League group before Christmas, and were beaten 5-1 at Lille in the Coupe de la Ligue semifinals last month.

Earlier this month, they suffered an agonising 4-3 extra-time home defeat to Nantes in the last 16 of the Coupe de France.

Goalkeeper Jerome Prior and defender Lamine Sane were suspended after coming to blows following that game and Sagnol currently has 11 players out through injury.

He said the fact that the club had only the seventh-biggest budget in Ligue 1 would eventually have an impact on performances on the pitch.

"Bordeaux cannot always do as well with less and less [resources]," he said. "After that, it will be up to me whether I accept it or not. Is the ultimate ambition of the club to be always in the top six or to be in the top 10, to play European football once every two years?

"When I was a player, I had high objectives. As a manager, I'm focused on projects. They should be stimulating."
