Five United stars 'axed by Van Gaal'

The Premier League season is less than a week away while the transfer window is creaking slowly toward *slamming shut*. Step this way for a round-up of the latest Transfer Talk gossip ...

TOP PICKS: Rafael, Marouane Fellaini, Nani, Anderson and Javier Hernandez have been told they have no Old Trafford futures by new boss Louis van Gaal, the Daily Mail has reported.

Arsenal have emerged as surprise contenders for the signature of Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and are confident of beating Manchester United to the 25 million pound-rated German World Cup winner.

Manchester United are keen to sign Angel Di Maria but it could cost them upwards of 60 million euros as Carlo Ancelotti wants to hang on to his star midfielder. The Red Devils also face a battle with Chelsea for Roma's Mehdi Benatia.

- Arsenal want to sign Edinson Cavani according to his agent who has been speaking rather candidly about his client's prospects in the French press.

- PSG could move for any one of Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney or Andre Schurrle is they decide to cash in on Edinson Cavani, according to Le Parisien.

22.52 BST: That's all for today, but we'll be back before long with the best of Monday's transfer tittle-tattle.

22.50 BST: The Daily Express seems to think Chelsea are planning a move for Fiorentina's Juan Cuadrado. Surely not...

22.12 BST: And speaking of defenders no one has made a bid for, click here for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers discussing the Daniel Agger situation.

21.54 BST: Barcelona have not received any offers for Dani Alves and are happy with their current squad, according to sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta. Story here.

21.09 BST: ESPN pundit Craig Burley has said he isn't shocked by reports that five players have been shown the Old Trafford door by Louis van Gaal:

20.37 BST: Rafael, Marouane Fellaini, Nani, Anderson and Javier Hernandez have been told they have no Old Trafford futures by new boss Louis van Gaal, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Mail said Dutchman Van Gaal had told the five players that they would not be part of his plans in a series of face-to-face meetings, saying they should begin work to find new clubs before the closure of the transfer window on Sept. 1.

However, the paper said Japan international Shinji Kagawa had been told he did have a United future -- but that it would be as third choice behind Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

The Mail also claimed Van Gaal, who had been interested in signing Tomas Vermaelen from Arsenal before the defender went to Barcelona, was now keen to bring in Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

20.12 BST: Norwich boss Neil Adams didn't enjoy the happiest of starts to life in the Championship with the Canaries -- but he hopes Leory Fer will make him happier by still being at Carrow Road once the transfer window has closed.

Speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux, Adams told Sky Sports: "Hopefully [Fer will stay]. Hopefully he'll be fit as well. He's done a bit of training on his own, and now he's just started to join in with the group after his exploits at the World Cup. The sooner we get him back, the better."

19.36 BST: Arsene Wenger remains on the lookout for a defender after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, saying: "If I can find another one, I will do it."

However, he warned that it "will not be easy" to find a replacement of the departing Vermaelen's quality, explaining: "He had the choice between two big clubs, two massive clubs. It means these clubs have looked everywhere as well. That means it is not easy to find a defender.''

19.12 BST: Have Barcelona received any offers for full-back Dani Alves? No, they have not, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has told reporters.

19.03 BST: Leicester City striker Chris Wood could be on his way to Championship newcomers Wolves -- but boss Kenny Jackett said much remained to be done before any deal was sealed. Speaking after his side had beaten Norwich 1-0 at Molineux to get their campaign off to a perfect start, he told Sky Sports: "I don't really want to talk about other team's players. We have made an approach, but we have got a long way to go in terms of sealing him as a Wolves player."

18.45 BST: Arsenal may have won the Community Shield -- and done so in both comfort and style against Manchester City -- but Arsene Wenger has indicated that their summer business may not be over, telling Sky Sports: "We're still out there to see if we can do something."

18.38 BST: The Daily Express has claimed that Manchester United will look to bring Barcelona's Alex Song to Old Trafford if they fail to sign Arturo Vidal from Juventus.

Vidal has long been linked with a move to United, but reports suggest that boss Louis van Gaal has concerns over a knee problem he had suffered. Juve, meanwhile, have warned United that they will need to complete the move within a week - and could miss out if they do not do so.

18.30 BST: New Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has tweeted his thanks to Arsenal fans for their backing during his five years in north London:

18.05 BST: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking after the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, said he wanted to push through the signing of Porto defender Elaquim Mangala before the Premier League season kicks off next weekend.

"Maybe we need some papers, but we continue our interest in the player -- who wants to come -- so we'll see what happens," he said.

17.45 BST: Here's a nice problem to have -- new Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino says he has too many players.

The London Evening Standard reported the White Hart Lane boss indicated that some stars could be on their way out, explaining: "We have a long, long squad list.

"I think we need to take a decision now to decide how many players to keep, because we have more than 25. For me, it's too many players. My idea is 25, no more than 25. We need to decide our squad for the future."

17.32 BST: Not that there was much speculation about his future, but good news for West Brom fans anyway!

17.26 BST: All very happy and sweet this departure. You get the feeling this is the first time Arsene Wenger has had a player go to Barcelona and still thinks his team has improved.

17.19 BST: Brendan Rodgers remains hopeful of signing one or two more players but has no further news on signing Alberto Moreno. He told reporters after beating Dortmund: "Not really [Moreno not close], not unless you know more than me. We've got one or two things we want to do before now and the end of August."

17.11 BST: He was going to go to Arsenal. Then he might have gone to Spurs. Then he failed a medical at Liverpool. And then there was talk of a return to Newcastle. But it looks like Loic Remy will be starting the season at QPR after Harry Redknapp declared: "He's here, he wants to work and get in the team. He's worked really hard on the training ground, I couldn't have asked for any more from him. He's trained great and his attitude's been first class. Hopefully with a week's training he'll be fit to play next week."

17.05 BST: Radamel Falcao's father has begun stirring the transfer pot and told reporters there is no guarantee his son will be at Monaco next season. Radamel Garcia said: ""I can't rule out that my son might leave. But the only thing I can say is that, for now, he has a contract with Monaco."

Very ambiguous but enough to cause the Express to bite. Apparently Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City have all been put on red alert. Obviously.

16.53 BST: Following Ajax's 4-1 opening day victory over Vitesse in the Eredivisie...

16.40 BST: Despite concerns Everton wouldn't give Christian Atsu much game time, Chelsea look set to send the Ghanaian on loan to their Premier League rivals after being unable to find any other suitable suitors, according to reports.

16.31 BST: Treading carefully with this one but despite his ongoing court case, Ravel Morrison could be set to double his wages by joining Cardiff City, according to the Telegraph. Apparently boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not deterred by Morrison's personal life and believes the troubled young midfielder can thrive under him.

Despite a court case hanging over his head Ravel Morrison could be set for a double your money move to Cardiff City.

16.21 BST: QPR are hoping to lure Jonathan de Guzman from Villareal despite being linked with a permanent move to Swansea following two seasons on loan there, according to the Mirror.

16.12 BST: Marseille chairman Vincent Labrune has spent the weekend in Rome. Not on his holidays but working on transfers as he negotiates the sale of Lucas Mendes for four million euros to Lazio, according to an interview in La Provence.

16.03 BST: Man United could make an offer for Daley Blind as early as tomorrow according to Tuttomercatoweb. After summing up their options over the weekend Ed Woodward is likely to make his first move for the Ajax star on Monday.

15.57 BST: Radamel Falcao's teammates have re-iterated their hope that the Colombian will stay at Monaco. Ricardo Carvalho, speaking to Le Parisien, said he is used to hearing rumours about his more illustrious teammate but hopes the club and the player stick together for an assault on the Ligue 1 title.

15.44 BST: Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis is said to be welcoming interest from Benfica. According to reports, the Greek international has told his representatives to speak to the Portuguese champions about a move, having been loaned to Granada last season.

15.36 BST: Fiorentina have pinpointed either Villarreal's Tomas Pina or Athletic Bilbao's Ander Iturraspe to strengthen their central midfield. It's been no secret La Viola want to strengthen in that area, and now reports suggest Vincenzo Montella has asked for these two players.

15.22 BST: Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, who was last week branded by Brendan Rodgers as unsellable due to his winning mentality, is close to joining Trabzonspor according to reports.

15.15 BST: Here we go again. Reports are now surfacing that Liverpool will sign Sevilla full back Alberto Moreno after the UEFA Super Cup is played between his current club and Real Madrid. It's on. It's off. It's on. It's off. And now it is back on again. Got a funny feeling we haven't heard the last of this.

15.04 BST: Turkish side Bursaspor are in talks to sign Jimmy Briand. The free agent saw out his contract at Lyon this summer and has attracted interest from West Ham and West Brom but according to DHA, the Frenchman may be moving to Turkey rather than the Premier League.

14.55 BST: Mats Hummels is the new Borussia Dortmund captain. Surely that will put to bed any more rumours about him leaving. You'd think anyway...

14.50 BST: Take a swipe Heurelho Gomes! The former Tottenham goalkeeper has blasted his former club for 'treating him badly.' He said: "For me, the problem was them blocking every move whenever a club wanted to sign me."

14.42 BST: This one has been rumbling on for so long now, maybe it is a confirmed deal and everyone in the world just missed it...

14.39 BST: Sunderland have emerged as favourites to sign Nacer Chadli from Tottenham. The Belgian has already re-iterated his desire to stay at Spurs and fight for his place after an indifferent first season at White Hart Lane. But The Advertiser claims the winger could be tempted to go to the north-east on a loan deal to get some fitness and form back.

14.32 BST: Have Real Madrid got rid of the wrong goalkeeper?

14.25 BST: And if Serge Gnabry leaves because there are too many attacking midfielders in Arsenal's squad, it would make sense then that the Daily Star have today exclusively revealed that the Gunners are going to try and sign Adrien Rabiot from PSG. Apparently due to his contract negotiations breaking down and the likes of AC and Inter Milan unable to stump up the cash to sign him, Arsene Wenger may steal in and grab the highly-rated French youngster.

14.18 BST: Crystal Palace are going to try and make another offer for Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry. The winger is extremely highly rated at Arsenal and would be allowed to leave on loan to gain more first team experience. However, the Croydon Advertiser claim the German may be more interested in a move to Newcastle or Southampton where he would get more playing time than at Selhurst Park.

14.12 BST: They're not far wrong. Could cost Europe's elite in the 30 million+ region in a few years time.

14.08 BST: Tottenham are weighing up whether to make a shock 12 million pound move for Liverpool defender Daniel Agger. The Herts and Essex Observer say Mauricio Pocchetino is looking to bolster his defensive options and would consider the outcast Dane a credible signing.

Could Daniel Agger be gracing White Hart Lane next season?

13.50 BST: Benfica looked all but set to offload Franco Jara earlier this week but Tuttomercatoweb have exclusively revealed the player has chosen not to join Braga.

13.45 BST: Looks like it is more than just fanciful interest from the Dutch champions.

13.37 BST: Thievy Bifouma is set to join Malaga on loan from Espanyol according to L'Equipe. Malaga will have an option to buy at the end of the year.

13.30 BST: Monaco and Arsenal target Douglas Costa may not get a move from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer because of the huge fee people would have to pay to sign him. According to Le 10 Sport, the 50 million euro price tag is far too much and so the Brazilian may have to spend another season in the Ukraine, even though he is desperate for a moce.

13.20 BST: Daniele Vantaggiato is wanted by Celtic according to Tuttomercatoweb. After his release from Padua, the Italian striker is also being tracked by Derby County and Livorno.

13.12 BST: Big story in AS today claiming Atletico Madrid have been offered Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund for just 25 million euros. The report claims the German's agent has been touting his client around Europe with the Spanish champions a favoured destination. Can't help but feel if Reus was available at that sort of price, half of Europe would be after his signature, which, I guess they are to some extent!

13.05 BST: Quite the statement from cash-strapped Inter to make...

12.57 BST: An update on the future of highly sought after defender Daley Blind.

12.50 BST: Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol wants to raid his former club - who he used to play for not manage - in Bayern Munich in order to bring in Diego Contento. The German international has been deemed surplus to requirements at the German champions and is expected to confirm his transfer tomorrow, say L'Equipe.

12.41 BST: Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Roma forward Adem Ljajic according to Il Messaggero. The report goes as far to say that the Serbian's agent has been contacted by the Spaniards and all that is left to do is negotiate a fee with Roma.

Adem Ljajic is a possible target for Atletico Madrid despite signing Antoine Griezmann in recent weeks.

12.34 BST: Fiorentina are set to beat Lazio and Udinese to the signature of Bologna midfielder Panagiotis Kone. The Greek midfielder is available for less than five million euros and according to Tuttomercatoweb, is a top target for Vincenzo Montella.

12.30 BST: Erm, interesting.

12.05 BST: According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Real Madrid have been tracking Mattia De Sciglio for a number of weeks but have now turned their attentions to Matteo Darmian of Torino after being priced out of a move for the AC Milan youth product.

11.57 BST: It was announced fairly late last night so in case you missed it. Read the full story here.

11.51 BST: Arsenal could be set to lose Lukas Podolski who may find his playing time cut even shorter by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates. According to Sport Bild, Galatasaray are weighing up an offer which could see the German World Cup winner head to Turkey in a 12 million pound deal. However they also face competition from Schalke.

11.48 BST: Genoa are set to sign Brazilian Edenilson from Udinese according to Sky Sports Italia. Apparently the midfielder has already passed a medical and will start training with his new teammates tomorrow, with only an official confirmation left to announce.

11.42 BST: Marseille defender Lucas Mendes could be about to leave the club according to L'Equipe who say there is interest from Lazio and Valencia. However the team who has made a bid has not yet been identified though the offer is said to be 'significant'.

11.36 BST: Fiorentina appear to have found their replacement should Juan Cuadrado leave the club. According to Gianluca di Marzio, Chelsea's forgotten man Marko Marin will join La Viola as a direct wing replacement for the outbound Colombian.

11.31 BST: After all the column inches taken up about Zakaria Bakkali leaving PSV because he is angry at the club and now he is set to sign a new contract. That will leave the various clubs around Europe, including Liverpool, Spurs and Atletico Madrid, very disappointed.

11.10 BST: Napoli are set to turn their back on a bid for Marouane Fellaini after not being able to meet his 100,000 pound per week wages. The Independent on Sunday are reporting Rafael Benitez will now turn his attention to Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, who he brought to Anfield while he was the boss there.

11.04 BST: West Ham's search for a striker to fill the big boots left by Andy Carroll's latest injury looks set to be over as they close in on Metz's Diafra Sakho. 10.55 BST: DONE DEAL! One year loan deal for the now 28 year old Ibrahim Afellay.

10.49 BST: A little transfer merry-go-round now from Italy, to Wales and back to Greece. Anyway, with Napoli's Federico Fernandez widely reported to be heading to Swansea City, Rafael Benitez has identified two targets to replace him. According to reports in Italy, Kostas Manolas of Olympiakos is the number one target but will cost in the region of 15 million euros. It remains to be seen if Wilfried Bony will be a Swansea player for the 2014-15 Premier League season.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants Wilfried Bony and the striker wants the move, but is he worth 19 million pounds?

United and Chelsea's Benatia battle

Manchester United spent last summer chasing unrealistic targets in Cesc Fabregas, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo before David Moyes scrambled around on deadline day to buy Marouane Fellaini for more than his buyout clause of 24 million pounds.

They have fared smoother this time around, but with the Premier League season just days away, they still require defensive and midfield reinforcements.

And in a week in which one target, Thomas Vermaelen, moved to Barcelona instead of Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal now faces a fight to snap up another star. Roma's centre-back Mehdi Benatia is on his radar and although La Gazzetta dello Sport reckon United are in with a shout, Chelsea are now on the scene as well.

A chase has sparked between two of the Prem's biggest for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.
A chase has sparked between two of the Prem's biggest for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

We fear for Ed Woodward if he fails to close out another deal...

Di Maria will cost you ...

Here's some PSG logic: spend circa 50 million euros on David Luiz and then withdraw from the race to sign Angel di Maria as he's too expensive. Ah.

The Real Madrid attacker's future remains up in the air -- Manchester United (of course) have been linked with him -- but Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is eager to keep him, so says L'Equipe.

Manchester United may be looking to add Real Madrid's Angel di Maria into the mix.
Manchester United may be looking to add Real Madrid's Angel di Maria into the mix.

Its report reckons Ancelotti is counting on Di Maria for the new season and will countenance a sale only if a club stumps up a whopping 60 million euros. Or one-and-a-bit of David Luiz, to be precise.

Interestingly, Louis van Gaal directly mentions Di Maria in this report over his attacking options at United.

Over to you, Ed ...

Spurs defender out the door?

In true transfer window style, Benatia's exit from Roma could trigger a "domino effect" which could lead to Vlad Chiriches falling out the exit door and into the arms of the Serie A side.

Vlad Chiriches could be departing White Hart Lane after just one season.
Vlad Chiriches could be departing White Hart Lane after just one season.

Mauricio Pochettino is not convinced by the Romanian and a Benatia-shaped hole will need to be filled if he does leave.

Hence why Gazzetta also has a line on the Tottenham defender heading to Rome. It reckons it could be initially on loan before a permanent deal is arranged. A try-before-you-buy, if you will.

Ravel to Cardiff?

Probably best for us to tread carefully here so we'll just say this: Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign Ravel Morrison from West Ham. according to the Daily Mail.

Moving on ...

Jimenez the striker for Simeone?

A few weeks ago it looked as if Javier Hernandez was on his way to the Vicente Calderon to join Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid, but now it appears Club America's Raul Jimenez has been anointed as the one to play up front for Los Colchoneros.

Spanish daily Diario AS reports that Jimenez, fresh off a hat trick performance last week for Las Aguilas, is on the verge of joining the reigning La Liga champions for a sum of 11 million euros. With Diego Costa and David Villa departing the Calderon over the summer, Atletico would open the Spanish season with Jimenez and Croatia striker Mario Manduzkic as their leading men.

Club America striker Raul Jimenez is reportedly on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid.

Ajax want Eto'o

West Ham were linked with a surprise move for free agent Samuel Eto'o following his departure from Chelsea, but Ajax are now interested too.

Voetbal International has the scoop and even has some gushing quotes from Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars, who reckons a move for the 33-year-old would represent "fantastic" business.
