Wayne Rooney watches on as Man United beat CSKA Moscow in UCL

Manchester United assured their passage into the Champions League knockout phase with a comfortable 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford, and did so with their all-time record goalscorer sat in the stands.

Indeed, Wayne Rooney -- these days of Everton -- decided to grace his old stomping ground with his presence once more, taking a seat in one of the luxury boxes for the occasion.

Rooney was spotted sitting alongside former United teammate Michael Carrick in the upper tiers.

While the victory was ultimately routine for the home side, their night didn't go entirely smoothly as the prematch UEFA pageantry was hit by a rather sizeable technical snag.

With both teams lined up before the match, the public address system at Old Trafford refused to play ball when it came to piping the Champions League anthem through the speakers -- making things a little awkward for everybody involved.

Still, it was plain sailing from there, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku ensuring a berth in the next round for Jose Mourinho's side.

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.
