Spanish third-tier side Ponferradina fuming after disallowed goal

Spanish third-tier side Ponferradina saw a potentially vital winning goal chalked off in fairly absurd circumstances in the very final second of their recent bottom-of-the-league clash against Gimnastica Segoviana.

With the match goalless and in the 94th minute, Ponferradina midfielder Andres Rodriguez latched on to a high cross to score what he thought was a last gasp winner.

However, referee Alvaro Lopez Parra began to blow the final whistle just as Rodriguez dinked the ball over the onrushing Gimnastica goalkeeper and therefore ruled the goal out before it touched the back of the net.

The Ponferradina players then swarmed around the official, protesting that Rodriguez had released his shot before the third and final full-time whistle had sounded.

Unfortunately for them, referee Lopez Parra upheld his original call and the match was officially logged as a 0-0 draw, leaving both sides languishing in the Segunda B relegation zone.

Lopez Parra later explained his decision to disallow the goal, claiming he blew his whistle immediately after noticing he'd already played 17 seconds beyond the allotted three minutes of stoppage time.

Something tells us that's hardly going to come as much comfort.
