Guyana goalkeeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle scores on international debut

In our mind, there can only be one sight finer than a goalscoring goalkeeper and that's an 18-year-old goalkeeper opening his account on his international debut.

That's exactly what fate befell teenage Barnet stopper Kai McKenzie-Lyle when he made his international bow for Guyana in a recent Gold Cup qualifier against neighbours Suriname.

With Guyana trailing 3-1 and extra time wicking away, McKenzie-Lyle went galloping up the pitch for a late set piece.

And it was his slightly scruffy header that bobbled into the back of the Suriname net.

"When I first ran up for the free kick I noticed I was maybe a foot taller than all of the other players," McKenzie-Lyle told reporters.

"The guy who took the free kick told me he would aim for me and I said I would get my head on it. I did that and it went over the keeper and bounced in!

"It took a couple of seconds to realise I had scored but my immediate thought was I had to spin back and get back in goal to start again and look for the equaliser."

Sadly, it wasn't to be as despite McKenzie-Lyle's hard work, the match ended 3-2 in Suriname's favour.

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.
