FA Cup holders Arsenal have a trophy worth over £1 million

Some would say winning the FA Cup is priceless.

The third and most long-serving incarnation of the FA Cup trophy has become the most expensive item ever valued on the Antiques Roadshow in the venerated BBC programme's 38-year history.

The trophy, which dates from 1911, was valued by Roadshow silver expert Alaistair Dickenson as worth "over a million pounds," meaning it narrowly eclipses the previous record valuation: a scale model of Anthony Gormley's Angel of the North statue, which was valued at £1 million in 2008.

The cup, which was used for 81 years before being replaced by a series of identical replicas, was taken into the show by BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan and Leeds United legend Eddie Gray, who won it in 1972.

However, despite its value and cultural significance, Dickenson claimed that the FA Cup may well have merely been an "off the shelf" purchase that was probably originally intended to be an ornate champagne bucket.

"Now I may be banned from every football ground in the country for saying this, but I suspect that this may have been an off-the-shelf piece, that it may not be specifically made," he said.

"I think that because it has all these grapes and vines on it, it might have been a wine or champagne cooler.

"The hardest thing of all about this is putting a value on it. This is, alongside the Wimbledon trophy, the most famous cup in the country.

"I think, quite comfortably, this has got to be worth well over £1million -- the highest ever value I have given on Antiques Roadshow."
