Student team launch bid for Liverpool defender Jose Enrique
He may find himself way down the pecking order at Liverpool at the moment, but it looks like out-of-favour defender Jose Enrique may be about to be offered a way out of the Anfield doldrums.
Indeed, an Oxford College student football team have launched an ambitious bid to sign the 30-year-old left-back, who has made just three paltry appearances for the Reds' senior side so far this season.
The ploy was originally proposed by student Sam Billington after he identified that Enrique could definitely help the Somerville College men's team plug their leaky defence.
The motion was then passed by the Somerville College JCR (the resident student body), who have cleared Billington to approach Liverpool with the offer of a three-month, "pay-as-you-play" deal for the Spaniard.
"@SomervilleJCR: meeting over, we're signing Jose Enrique" Delighted to see that my motion to bid for Enrique passed in Somerville tonight!- Sam Billington (@samoxford) February 14, 2016
We know what you're thinking -- but no, Billington is deadly serious!
"I strongly believe that Jose Enrique would be a fantastic addition not just to the SCFC squad but to Somerville as a whole," Billington told the Oxford Student.
"With an upcoming crunch match which could turn into a promotion playoff against Hertford on Mar. 4, we feel Enrique can provide competition for places in the squad and fill that gap."
He then went on to list Enrique's many desirable qualities including the veteran left-back's positional versatility (he once kept a clean sheet while playing in goal back in 2012), his flawless record as Liverpool captain (P1 W1) and his fondness for a capella singing.
And it's not like Billington hasn't formulated a back-up plan either. Should Somerville fail in their attempts to lure Enrique, they want to bring in Frank Lampard instead.
Not for his midfield nous or big game experience, but because the NYCFC star has three A's at A-Level: the desired entry criteria for entry to Oxford.
