Poole Town fans set to win big after placing Charlie Austin for England bet

A speculative bet placed on Charlie Austin some six years ago is poised to win a group of Poole Town supporters almost £8,000.

Austin had just left Poole for Swindon Town at the time having scored 64 goals in 57 games during the season-and-a-half he spent with the club in the Wessex League Premier Division.

Certain that their departing striker was destined for bigger and better things, a syndicate of 16 Poole supporters clubbed together and stuck a £155 wager on Austin scoring for England one day at odds of 50/1.

After continuing his prolific scoring feats at first Swindon then Burnley then QPR, Austin deservedly received his first ever call-up into the England squad for next Thursday's friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

Should the striker score on his debut, the group of Poole fans -- who include the club's commercial chief Mark Bumford -- will land themselves a £7,905 pot.

"The local bookies are aware they might have to cough up. They don't mind. It's good publicity," Bumford told BBC Sport. "[Austin] was always confident and sure of himself. A little cocky.

"But with 46 goals in 46 games in his first season, then 18 goals in his last 11 matches for us, including five in his last game, he could afford to be."
